Virtual distance learning is the online form of distance education, wherein the teacher and students interact with each other via the internet. All the course material, assignments, and other exchanges happen technologically, aided by new age communication means and computers. The online mode of distance learning allows teachers and students to interact with each other either in real-time or asynchronously. Owing to the boom in technology since the mid 1980's - the concept of e-learning has spread far and wide. Today, students from around the world can attend the institution of their choice, even if it is thousands of miles away.
The Mode and Method
Virtual distance learning is basically a computer based training method; it has been made highly interactive in the last few years with the use of CD's, LCD's, audio - video conferencing, online chatting and even web cam interaction. So even though the teacher and his class of students might be separated physically, the interaction between them is no less intense. For effective communication and relay of information, teaching institutes should have an able technology network, which can support the process of teaching aptly. Also required are competently designed instructional systems, which the student can understand without problems.
What is Available and Who is Offering It?
Today, there are a host of colleges and universities who are offering virtual distance learning courses to willing students. The world has realized the power of the internet and technology, and every educational body wants to broaden its student's base by enrolling people from far and wide. Amongst some notable colleges offering courses online are The Colorado State University which offers an undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on Communication and Public Affairs and graduate courses in Statistics, Materials Engineering and Chemical Engineering amongst others. The Mercy College, New York offers a range of virtual distance learning courses like MS degrees in Banking, Direct Marketing, and Human Resources Management. The University of Alabama has some exciting courses like an MS degree in Aerospace Engineering and a BS in Human Environmental sciences for interested students.
Students of online courses are becoming more and more aware of their needs. They are also becoming well-versed with the technologies being employed for teaching and are extremely careful about the colleges that they sign up with. It is a must in virtual distance learning, to be well informed and have researched what's on offer before making a choice.
